A New Release Next Week

I hope people remembered I’ve changed my posts from Fridays to Wednesdays and come visit today. It’s appropriate in a fun way, I think, considering Wednesday is named for the Germanic god Wodan, identified with the Norse god Odin. And I do like my Norse gods, I will admit.

Anyway, quick post today. Many thanks to Matt Larkin at Incandescent Phoenix for his review of “City of Dis.”

Also, I have a surprise planned for next week that I wanted to let everyone in on. For the next few months, I’d like to try to release a short story a month, starting with a reprint of a fantasy short that appeared in Leading Edge Magazine. Most of you are unfamiliar with my traditional and epic fantasy, except for one excerpt I put up on Urban Psychopomp in a Blog of DOOM Award post.

I have four stories in mind for release between now and the end of January 2012, and I will probably bundle them up into a collection titled The Dark of the Year in February 2012, just as the traditional dark season is ending. (Yeah, I’m a folklore geek like that.)

Two of the stories will be reprints, and a third will be the story that prompted the most knowledgeable and respected editor in science fiction and fantasy to say, “Stories like this are the reason I read.” And, YES, I still intend to have that carved into my tombstone someday.

Here’s a little glimpse into next week…

And some mood music (even though there are no vampires in my story, it still fits…

  1. Ooo, so you're joining me on the "a story a month" thing? Maybe I should make a challenge of it for 2012. ^_^

I'm looking forward to seeing more stories from you, and yes, I do still plan to review "City of Dis". :)

  2. That pic of the woman with the blacked out eye is totally creeping me out...

I love the idea of a short story a month! And wow, what an amazing compliment from the editor. Congrats!

  3. You've been busy. But the more you get your name out there the more people will see it and get to know you. Wish I knew how to write a decent short story. I see a lot of self-published authors doing well with their short collections.

  4. Hi, Carradee! The story a month is easy when I'm working with reprints. LOL. I doubt I could keep it up past February. With some schedule-shifting I did with my editor, I'll still be working on the novel at that point.

I'm really glad to read that you're looking forward to more. Establishing an audience is turning out to be a long slooow climb. (But I got two more 5-star reviews today on Goodreads!)

Hi, Tricia. :) Creepy is good in this case; it fits the character.

I suspect the editor probably doesn't especially remember he said that (at Viable Paradise), but it's hard for an aspiring author to forget when PNH says something like that. One of those "I'll never wash this hand again" moments. :P

Heya. L.G.! Yep, exactly. The ereading audience has a short memory and an insatiable appetite for content, so regular releases are *very* important. I suspect the novel will come out in April or May (my editing spot shifted to March so I could work with my preferred editor). So I need to come up with shorts for March and maybe April.

Ah, yes, the business side of writing. It's a biatch.

  6. I'm with TL here. That lady in blue is really creepy. You know what I love about this post? By the sound of it, I'll have a nice Margo-TBR pile by the time I've can read. :D

  7. Hi, Shannon! Thank you for the luck.

Heya, Claudie! I'll do my best to build the pile high. :)
